Another Portrait….

July 11, 2008

Hey everyone. I was just looking through some older portrait work that I had done and came across this portrait of Dalila. It’s still one of my favorite classically styled portraits that I’ve shot and I wanted to share it with the rest of you.

It’s a simple 2 light setup. One strobe thru a white umbrella off camera left (Rembrandt style) with a bare strobe behind her off camera right. Shot with a 50mm prime lens on my old Canon XTi. I then ran my usual dodge/burn and retouching… no presets or actions here.

Anyway… I hope you like this one as much as I do.

Thanks!

Wassup y’all?! I know, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. No reason really… just haven’t blogged lately. I have however been shooting and I have some very cool portraits to share.

As you have seen in the previous post, I shot a set for a band called the Superficial Saints out in Burbank a while ago. Well, now, they have added another permanent member to the band and needed to re-shoot for their upcoming album release next month at the Key Club in Hollywood.

From the get go, I had an idea for a “Saintly” theme which involved a very cool lighting setup and some extensive post-production. I had a blast working with my lighting again… so much fun dialing everything in and getting unique shots.

The shots are below, so please take a gander and let me know what ya think! I’m also thinking about setting up a local get-together with other photographers who are interested in learning how to shoot with multiple and/or single light setups. Nothing really in the works yet, but if I get some decent feedback… who knows. =)

Enjoy the photos! Thanks!!

-Special thanks to my good buddy Ivan Leumann for assisting on this shoot. Good times.

Chris Poulson - Lead Vocals / Guitar

Nik Lawhorn (Lead Guitar)

Jeff Miklaszewski - Drums

Ryan Demaree - Keys / Bg-Vocal

Jay Tag - Bass

This past Saturday, the 10th, I had a blast shooting a new up and coming band for their new album and video promotion. The Superficial Saints, based out of Southern California, are comprised of Chris Poulson (Lead Vocals / Guitar), Nik Lawhorn (Lead Guitar),  Ryan Demaree (Keys / Bg-Vocal) and Jeff Miklaszewski (Drums). Four of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet.

The shoot kicked off at their rehearsal studio in Burbank where we had a full team including makeup and a hair stylist. Don’t worry… it’s more of a grooming process than the initial “HOLY 80’s BATMAN!” that would think of when it comes to guys, music and makeup. =)

After shooting a pretty decent amount of frames in their studio, we packed light and head north to the freeway overpass. We found a ton of great little spots to shoot. I love it when everything works out on the fly like that. Plus, it’s always nice when you have the time to meter all your shots, retouch faces, straighten out wardrobe and move to the next location… All without being rushed and pressed for time.

So… basically it was a great day. I met some awesome people. Got to shoot. Ended up with GREAT results… it doesn’t get better than that. Well…  nevermind. Check out the photos. =)

Thanks again guys! It was a blast working with you and I hope to see you on Tuesday night at the Viper Room!

Portraits! …updated.

March 25, 2008

So… the portrait trade session out in Pasadena is over. We didn’t have much of a turn out, unfortunately. I think that it was tough for most to make it out on a Moday @ 3pm with work, traffic, etc. We still had a good amount of fun though. Araxi stopped by for a little bit before anyone else showed up and said hello. I loved talking with her about how things are going with our lives and businesses… she is so nice! A little bit later Mark Christensen showed up followed by Conrad Lim. We got to talk quite a bit and joke around quite a bit more. Oh… and YES… we took some pictures too! =)

Below are some of the shots that I took while I was out there…

- This little guy was hanging out with me while I waited for people to arrive. He walked up to like 3 feet from me and starting chowing down on acorns…

-Here is shot of Mark Christensen (photographer)…

- A couple of Conrad… (I love the light in these)

-This one cracks me up. Mark got Conrad to attempt to climb this palm tree and I got this one as he jumped down. By the way… if you don’t see any more posts from me in the near future, it just means that Conrad off’d me in some dark alley for posting this.   =)   (Sorry man, haha)

Thanks again guys (and Araxi) for coming out. ‘Till next time…

Wassup y’all. I wanted to share some images from a shoot I did last Friday in Laguna Beach. I met up in Laguna with a very talented makeup artist (who I’ve worked with before) by the name of Laura Harley. She brought her friend/model, Christina Marie, along to take some pictures down at the Surf & Sand Resort.

We arrived at 5pm and spent about an hour next to the pool at the Surf & Sand where Laura drew all over Christina’s face and made it pretty-like. =) After that we walked down to the sand and continued down the coast for about 5-6 minutes until we reached the rocks and cliffs. We setup and started shooting all over down on the sand, up on the rocks and in the water. I had an absolute blast working with Laura and Christina the evening. They are both extremely talented and I hope to work them more often. Good times.

I posted a few shots down below for you all to check out…

-Laura puttin’ on the “war-paint”-

I love this shot!

This is easily one of my favorite shots of the day… if not THE favorite.

I took this shot of Laura while waiting for the sun to hit horizon. Looks like a sunglasses ad. =)

So… thanks for checking out the shots. I’ll be sure to post something soon from the wedding that I assisted on that Saturday. Stay tuned for more!
