My wife was contacted a couple months ago by a friend who needed some headshots and wanted to also shoot a cool, modern pin-up set to kick start a new modeling portfolio. One thing led to another and my wife had found a killer hotel in Palm Springs to shoot at, we had a makeup artist on board, and the date was booked!

We stayed at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club, which had some of the coolest rooms I’ve ever stayed in. As soon as my wife and I saw how cool this hotel was from their website, we knew it would be a fun place to shoot. Our room had a California King sized bed with all kinds of retro decor, including a record player and some cool old photos pinned up on the slotted wall behind the bed. The other cool thing about our room was that it had a large patio with an outdoor fireplace and a sweet egg-shaped rocking chair… which you will see below. To say the least, we knew this would yield some killer photos.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon, got settled in and shot for a couple hours that night after the sun dropped. We utilized the room, the patio with the fireplace and also a bigger fireplace out in the common grounds of the hotel. The next day we got up and shot for nearly another two hours in that nice, soft, glowing natural light… my favorite! Check out the photos below, starting with the night session…

Makeup/Hair - Heidi Holliday  |  Style - Heather Kloster  |  Model - Sarah Hayden

The high temp was 115 degrees while we were there!! That fireplace did not help matters… but ya gotta get the shot!!  =)

Seriously… awesome.

She rocked those glasses like none other!…

These next four images were shot in the curtained entry-way into our patio. I love me some enveloping backlight!!

Thanks again to everyone who came out and made this shoot so much fun. Sarah, Heather, Heidi and Jason… you guys are the best!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting Angela for her portfolio. She needed some new content for agency submissions, so we headed to one of my favorite locations in Glendora and knocked out some beautiful photos. Take a look at some of my favorites from the shoot…

I’m curently working on some headshots that I will be sharing via blog-land of various actors and models…

…stay tuned.  =)

A couple days ago, I had the opportunity to shoot Ashley Kopaskie for her modeling portfolio. She is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet… and one hell of a trooper too! We put this together pretty fast and gave ourselves a very short time bracket to shoot it in.

We shot in one of my favorite locations in the foothills near my home. The light was phenomenal, the weather was perfect and the bugs… well, they were everywhere. They seemed to love Ashley quite a bit, too. =)

So, in an hours time we were set, shot and wrapped up and headed home. I am VERY happy with these photos and I can only hope that Ashley loves them as much as I do.

Enjoy!

My absolute favorite of the day…

Ashley, Sneak Peek…

Me, Ashley Kopaskie, my camera and some gorgeous sunlight… More to come from this quick little session. Stay tizzuned! (Yes, I Snoopafied that word…)

Happy New Year! I thought I would use this little bit of free time and throw up some photos from last week’s test shoot that I did down at Smash Photo Lab in Long Beach.  I teamed up with Janet Pippins (makeup artist) from San Diego and Yarley Arauz (Model) from LA and set up a few looks for potential portfolio display.

I kept these very simple and wanted to stay as clean as possible. For you photographers that read my little slice of web-land… I used no more than 2 lights on any of these. The first couple beauty shots were lit primarily from camera left, with a little fill light fired in on camera right. The red couch shots were ring flash only. The last one was done using my right flash as well… but this time, I put the light up on a boom and fired it about 45 degrees down, straight in front of the model. The ring flash becomes a beauty dish at that point and gives you that familiar “butterfly” shadow under the nose.

Anyway… I hope you enjoy the photos. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions and/or leave comments below. Have a safe and happy new year!!

Another Portrait….

July 11, 2008

Hey everyone. I was just looking through some older portrait work that I had done and came across this portrait of Dalila. It’s still one of my favorite classically styled portraits that I’ve shot and I wanted to share it with the rest of you.

It’s a simple 2 light setup. One strobe thru a white umbrella off camera left (Rembrandt style) with a bare strobe behind her off camera right. Shot with a 50mm prime lens on my old Canon XTi. I then ran my usual dodge/burn and retouching… no presets or actions here.

Anyway… I hope you like this one as much as I do.

Thanks!
